about.

Hola!

My name is Marina Moreno, and I am a strategic designer, design researcher, and facilitator working to co-create more caring, regenerative and fair futures.

I grew up near the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by volcanoes, salt, and science. My parents didn’t know then, but the biology that my mother taught me and mathematics that my father always gave me as a riddle, modelled to me the balance between care, intelligence and joy I strive to bring today to my work, and sparked my infinity curiosity for humans, nature and systems.

Today, I live in Naarm (also known as Melbourne), where I work as a Strategic Designer at Today, leveraging my design practice to design better services and systems that enhance community wellbeing and social justice.

I combine my work with a volunteer role as Community Host for codesignco, supporting and nurturing a community of practice that explores how to use co-design and adjacent practices to engage a diverse range of people in our work, to co-create compassionate systems.

As a designer coming from a family of teachers, I’m also a natural mentor and coach. I am dedicated to empowering designers and change-makers to approach their work thoughtfully, with consideration for ethics and social responsibility, while navigating the process creatively and with care. My experience in this field ranges from mentoring junior designers, working as a consultant professor for a Master's in Design at the Open University of Catalonia, guest lecturing at Tokyo University of Arts, leading a group of designer volunteers through Civic Makers, to facilitating several co-design and human-centered design capability building programs across Australia and Spain. Currently, I am accepting expressions of interest for co-design and human-centered design training in Spanish.

As an advocate for genuine co-design and committed to delivering meaningful outcomes throughout my work, bringing care to and through design is an important part of my practice. Is for that I bring a reflexive and trauma-informed approach to my work. After having designing for years in the social and community sector, I recently have started to write about design and care, reflecting on the role, impacts and layers of care in design, and how we can more intentionally bring it to our work.

my promise.

caring

i will bring my whole self to the process and I will show up authentically. my natural warmth and honest care enable me to build trusting relationships and create safe spaces that empower people to meaningfully participate in the design of their future.

committed

I am committed to having a positive impact through my work and life, at different rhythms and scales. i lead from a place of love and care, and thrive for ethical and quality work.

thoughtful

in my work, i create space for reflexivity and inquiry. i will invite you and others along the way, to nurture the process. i will combine it with pragmatic and strategic thinking, to lead us to action and achieve impact.

compassionate

my practice is rooted in empathy and compassion. understanding where each one of us is coming from, being compassionate, and focusing on the strengths we bring to create a better future.

my inside out.

Beyond my work, I love crafts, cultures, nature, clay, my dog, oceans, food and people.

Here I would love to share some of my personal project.

The object journey is a journey through objects, a project exploring the inherent relationship between things, people and culture. With a careful presentation and a significant expression of emotion, the OJ considers the concepts, crafts and rituals that surround everyday objects. I have travelled across Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia and Australia connecting with people, learning their craft, writing the story.

Weaves. is an space in which I explore both, my reflective and artistic practice. It’s a journal experiment, in which I will be combining a set of different prompts that provoke introspection to reflect on design theory and practice, to dive into a journey of discovery, new connections, reinterpretation, and creation.

If something of what I have shared resonates with you, feel free to connect with me. I’m always pleased to get to know people, perspectives and experiences.
